Vietnam’s 40-year journey of Doi moi (1986 - 2026) is not merely a historical period marked by economic growth, but also a profound revolution in leadership thinking, national governance, and the positioning of the country on the global map.
Looking back over the past 40 years, Vietnam has written a remarkable success story, widely recognised by the international community as an “Asian miracle”. The achievements of the Doi moi process are reflected not only in statistical indicators, but also in the profound transformation of infrastructure, people’s livelihoods, and the country’s standing in foreign relations.

| With its forest and maritime potential and advantages, Dak Lak province focusing on comprehensive development across all sectors. |
Vietnam’s Doi moi has consistently placed people at the centre of development, with the happiness and well-being of the people set as the highest objective. One of the most remarkable achievements has been the implementation of multidimensional poverty reduction, with the poverty rate plunging from 58 per cent in 1993 to just 1.3 percent in 2025. The healthcare and education systems have continued to undergo modernisation. Average life expectancy has reached 74.6 years, while Vietnam’s Human Development Index (HDI) has steadily improved, ranking 93rd out of all countries and territories worldwide.
Vietnam has successfully pursued the policy of “being a friend to all countries”, transforming itself from a nation once subject to isolation and embargoes into one deeply and comprehensively integrated into the international community. Vietnam has established diplomatic relations with 194 countries, expanded economic and trade ties with more than 230 countries and territories, and participated in 17 free trade agreements (FTAs). These efforts have opened broad access to global markets for Vietnamese goods, driving the country’s total import-export turnover to exceed US$930 billion in 2025.
Vietnam’s international standing has been steadily enhanced through its assumption of major responsibilities at the United Nations Security Council, ASEAN, and other key multilateral institutions. The country’s active participation in international peacekeeping operations and its contributions to addressing global challenges such as climate change have affirmed Vietnam as a responsible member of the international community with an increasingly influential voice on the global stage.

| After 40 years of implementing the Doi moi process, Dak Lak Province has continued to develop, further strengthening and asserting its position as a central hub of the Central Highlands region. |
Located at the heart of the Central Highlands, Dak Lak province has fully seized the opportunities brought about by the country’s Doi moi process to achieve significant socio-eco breakthroughs. After 40 years, from a locality once marked by hardship, poverty and underdevelopment, Dak Lak is rising to become a growth pole and an important hub for trade and connectivity at both regional and international levels.
The year 2025 marks a significant milestone in the development process of Dak Lak province. Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) in 2025 is estimated at VND 102,036 billion, recording a growth rate of 6.68% year-on-year. Despite facing numerous challenges stemming from market fluctuations, climate change and natural disasters, the province has maintained relatively strong growth momentum, reaffirming the soundness and effectiveness of its leadership, direction and management in socio-eco development.
One of the most distinctive achievements of Dak Lak province in recent years has been its strong push to develop strategic infrastructure systems, particularly inter-regional connectivity projects; the effective harnessing of renewable energy potential; and the accelerated implementation of administrative reform and digital transformation. The living standards of ethnic minority communities in Dak Lak have undergone fundamental improvements, with the multidimensional poverty rate steadily declining over the years. Cultural and human development has been identified as a solid foundation for building a prosperous, civilized and culturally distinctive Dak Lak in the new term.
The achievements of 40 years of Doi moi constitute an epoch-making miracle, laying a solid foundation that enables Vietnam to confidently enter a new era of national advancement. For Dak Lak, the accomplishments recorded over the past four decades stand as the most vivid testament to the vitality of the Doi moi policy at the local level.
