The People's Committee of Binh Kien Ward has officially opened the 2026 Cau Ngu (Whale Worship) Festival at Nam Hai Whale Mausoleum (Long Thuy Mausoleum) in Long Thuy Quarter. The event forms part of the province's 2026 summer tourism programme under the theme "Say Binh Kien".

Addressing the opening ceremony, comrade Truong Thanh Cuong, Deputy Secretary of the Ward Party Committee and Chairman of Binh Kien Ward People's Committee, said the Cau Ngu Festival has long served as a spiritual anchor, a symbol of community solidarity alongside a source of pride for generations of Long Thuy's fishing community. Beyond paying tribute to village founders while praying for favourable weather, calm seas and safe, prosperous fishing voyages, the festival helps preserve cultural heritage, foster public awareness of safeguarding Vietnam's maritime sovereignty as well as pass traditional values on to future generations. He affirmed that local authorities would continue supporting fishermen in building sustainable livelihoods while preserving and promoting the festival's cultural heritage.

Mr. Nguyen Cho, Head of Long Thuy Fishing Association, described the Cau Ngu Festival as the "second Tet" for Long Thuy's coastal community, providing an occasion for local residents to reaffirm shared beliefs, strengthen community  bonds and preserve long-standing cultural traditions.

According to Mr. Nguyen Cho, the festival has evolved into one of the locality's signature cultural events, enhancing Long Thuy's profile while encouraging fishermen to remain united, comply with regulations on legal fishing, protect the marine environment and maintain their livelihoods at sea, thereby contributing to safeguarding Vietnam's maritime sovereignty.

A highlight of the opening ceremony was the traditional sounding of three ceremonial gong sequences, marking the official start of the festival. This was followed by the release of doves and balloons, symbolising hopes for favourable weather, safe voyages, abundant catches c continued prosperity for local communities.

Following the ceremony, delegates, residents and visitors enjoyed a Ba Trao Rowing Chant folk performance before joining traditional rituals at Nam Hai Whale Mausoleum as part of the festival programme.

Running from July 24-28, the festival features a diverse programme of cultural and tourism activities, including a ceremonial sea procession honouring Nam Hai Deity; the "Colours of Long Thuy Fishing Village" exhibition showcasing OCOP products, local specialties combined with signature products; culinary stalls; nightly Ba Trao Rowing Chant performances, traditional opera and Bai Choi folk art; together with sporting events and traditional beach games.

Through these activities, organisers aim to showcase Binh Kien's distinctive culture, rich heritage, local communities alongside tourism potential, further strengthening its appeal among residents and visitors alike.
